OVERLAND ADVENTURE TOUR

Region: Gobi Desert, Central and Northern Mongolia

Length of Tour: 17 nights / 18 days

Day 1
Arrive in Ulaanbaatar and transfer to three or four star hotel. Optional city tour. Evening folk dance and music performance.

Day 2
After an early breakfast leave UB for our camp in the Middle Gobi. Picnic lunch. On the way visit Baga Gazriin Chuluu Lake and the ruins of the 10th century Sum Khukh Burd temple on an island in the middle of the lake. Overnight in traditional and comfortable gers at the camp.

Day 4
Breakfast at the camp. Continue to drive towards the South Gobi. On the way visit the Sangiin Dalai temple in Erdenedalai, one of the few monasteries and temples that survived the communist purges of the 1930s. Arrive at our camp in the Gobi in the late afternoon. Visit the stunning Yol Valley (Lammergeyer Valley) National Park for hiking and opportunities to photograph the gorge, the Gobi Glacier and the diverse local wildlife. Dinner and overnight at the Juulchin Hanbogd camp.

Day 5
Drive to Hongoryn Els Sand Dunes, also known as the Singing Sands for the noise the sands make in high winds. Spend the day exploring the dunes and hiking in the area. Picnic lunch. Overnight In ger camp.

Day 6
Start driving towards Karakorum. On the way visit the famous Flaming Cliffs (Bayan Zag), the site of numerous fossil discoveries by paleontologist Roy Chapman Andrews and others. Stop for the night in our ger camp near Ongyn Khiid.

Day 7
Continue driving to Karakorum, with a packed lunch on the way. Arrive at the ancient city of Karakorum in the late afternoon. Overnight in the Ger camp.

Day 8
Visit Erdene-Zuu, once one of the largest monasteries in Mongolia and almost totally destroyed in the 1930s. Tour of the monastery grounds and several chapels with excellent examples of Buddhist iconography dating from the 16th century. Visit to the symbolic ruins of Karakorum, the 13th century imperial capital of the Mongol Empire. Overnight in the Ger camp.

Day 9
Drive to Tsenheriin Jiguur Hot Springs. Lunch in our Tsenheriin Jiguur camp. In the afternoon relax in a hot spa and enjoy the therapeutic benefits of these famous springs. Overnight in camp.

Day 10
Drive to the extinct volcano called Horgo Mountain. Easy trekking to the volcanic crater, and back in time to enjoy the nearby Terhiin Tsagaan Lake. Overnight in ger camp.

Day 11
Early morning drive towards the Huvsgul, with a packed lunch on the way. Camp in tents.

Day 12
Drive to the 'Dark Blue Pearl of Mongolia'. Huvsgul Lake, on the way visit Murun. Overnight in ger camp.

Day 13
After breakfast, trekking around Khuvsgul Lake. Horse riding and a visit to a local nomadic family. Overnight in camp.

Day 14
Early morning drive to the Selenge River. Packed lunch on the way. Camp overnight on the banks of this pristine river.

Day 15
Drive to our camp at the beautiful Amarbayasgalant Monastery. Arrive in the afternoon.

Day 16
Breakfast at the camp and explore the monastery. Drive back to Ulaanbaatar and transfer to the hotel.

Day 17
City Tour including Zaisan Hill War Memorial and Gandan Monastery. Lunch in a restaurant. An afternoon visit to the Natural History Museum and shopping. Evening folklore performance. Farewell dinner in a restaurant.

Day 18
Breakfast at the hotel. Transfer to the railway or airport for departure.
